Empowering aquaculture with omega-3-rich diatoms

Microalgae, particularly diatoms, are fundamental to the marine aquatic food chain, serving as the cornerstone of life in the oceans. Given their essential role in forming the phytoplankton of the oceans, diatoms are crucial for the cultivation of aquatic species such as mollusks, shrimp and fish, making them indispensable in aquaculture.

Presently, most aquacultural enterprises produce their own supply of diatoms. The diatom cultures can be fed directly to the feeding animals on-demand, thereby eliminating the necessity for separate harvesting and processing. While on-site production may be cost-effective for small-scale enterprises, mass production of diatoms poses a significant challenge for many marine hatcheries and nurseries. The problem of high costs of individual hatcheries producing their own diatoms is compounded by the scarcity of expertise and desire to focus on core business  which commonly leads to crashes of diatoms at critical periods.

At i-MAF, we offer high-quality diatom feeds that allow hatcheries to focus on their core operations. Our preserved, Omega-3-rich diatom products are meticulously developed to meet the nutritional, physical and biosecurity needs of marine hatcheries.

Shrimp

In shrimp hatcheries diatom cultures have become the primary live feed for the earliest stages of larval development. These diatoms are the main food source for the initial planktonic, filter-feeding stages of shrimp. Adequate nutrition with high-quality diatoms is vital for ensuring robust growth and survival rates.

Shellfish

Shellfish farming relies heavily on the availability of diatoms and other microalgae in shallow, natural waters. Whether in natural environments or land-based systems, intensive shellfish rearing depends on a consistent supply of diatoms. Our diatom-based products for larvae and spat are designed to support controlled shellfish production, helping maintain optimal health and production conditions year-round.

Fish feed

Our products make exceptional additives to marine fish feeds. They are 100% plant-based, sustainably produced, and serve as both an attractant and a supplement to enhance fish diets. In certain cases, our products have been shown to offer additional benefits to fish populations. For instance, research has demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in lice infestations in salmon when conventional feed is supplemented with diatom biomass.
