Empowering sustainable aquaculture with nature’s best: diatoms

Diatoms form the foundation of the global aquatic food chain, providing essential Omega-3 fatty acids, proteins and other vital nutrients that are crucial for both fish and human health. By utilizing diatoms as a source of Omega-3, we can reduce the reliance on fish oil derived from wild-caught fish, thereby contributing to the sustainability of marine ecosystems. Additionally, diatoms are indispensable for land-based aquaculture, which helps to protect aquatic wildlife populations by reducing the pressure on natural habitats.

Sun-Powered Sustainability

At i-MAF, our products are sustainably manufactured in the Netherlands, utilizing natural sunlight through photosynthesis to create biomass. Unlike conventional agricultural practices, we do not use organic food sources like plant-derived sugars, ensuring a circular and sustainable production process. Our operations rely entirely on natural sunlight, eliminating the need for artificial light and the associated electricity consumption. We also avoid the use of pesticides and herbicides, ensuring a natural and clean production environment. Water is filtered and recycled, and food-grade materials are used to maintain the purity of our cultures. Our process is free from electricity or fossil fuel use for heating, depending solely on the natural warmth captured from sunlight, making it both energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. The moderate Dutch climate, with its cooler seasons, provides ideal conditions for the growth of diatoms.
